Diabetes is one of the five major killers in the world today. It affects practically all the organ systems and functioning of the body. The long list of complications of the disease as well as modern drugs used to control it are testimony to the malefic nature of this illness. It is no more a rich man’s disease as all sections of populations have begun to show high incidence of the same. Though allopathic medicine is struggling to keep diabetes at bay, traditional and natural healing systems have a definite, practical and effective solution free of any adverse reactions. Lets take a look…

In Ayurveda, the traditional healing system of India, diabetes is classified into 3 major and 20 subtypes. They are called kapha, vata and pitta. Kapha has 10 subtypes, pitta has 6 and vata has 4. Kapha type of diabetes is said to be completely curable in ayurveda.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), diabetes is called “wasting and thirsting disease”. There are 15 different types of TCM syndromes that result in diabetes like symptoms.  The main causes are yin and qi deficiency of spleen, stomach, liver and kidney along with other minor ones. Yin deficiency can cause yang excess which manifests as heat or fire. These are all said to be curable.

Diabetes and Yoga:
A combination of different yogic postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama) and cleansing procedures (shuddhi kriyas) have produced miraculous results. The yogic treatment cum research center in Japan treated 533 cases of diabetes with yoga therapy over a 20 year period. 407 cases completed treatment out of which 267 had improved or completely cured. 140 cases did not show any change.

Pranic healing treats both types of diabetes – 1. due to improper utilization of insulin and 2. due to insufficient production of insulin. This system cures diabetes by cleansing and energizing the congested solar plexus chakra as well as the pancreas, liver and kidneys. The ajna, navel and basic chakras also trreated. In case of deficiency of insulin the spleen chakra is congested and solar plexus chakra depleted. Ajna, navel and basic chakras also need to be treated as in the former.

Sujok therapy which was developed by Prof Park Jae Woo in the 1980s is also one of the powerful therapies for treating diabetes. Sujok is an advanced technique that works on correcting the energy structure of the body using acupressure, magnets, needles, exercises and others. It cures diabetes in three different ways namely, increasing the secretion of insulin from pancreas, improving the structure of the insulin produced and altering the cell membrane to enable increased uptake of glucose by the cells.

Medical Astrology on the other hand helps to detect the risk of diabetes as early as the time of our birth. Astrological charts of 750 diabetic patients were studied and common recurring patterns was recognized. Any of these patterns found in the birth chart of a person can indicate a higher risk to develop diabetes. Astrological remedies may be adopted to prevent the same.

Naturopathy aims to combat diabetes using a three pronged approach of nutrition counselling, exercise and comprehensive diabetic education. Simple tips like  adding omega 3 fatty acids to your diet, limit intake salt to 4-5 gms / day and many such important and useful guidelines. 50 minutes of exercise a day with a weight reduction of 7% leads to a 58% risk reduction and checks the progression of diabetes.
